As they have no real memory of themselves, the novel serves as a self discovery where they learn what skills they have and even what their name is by the end. Not only is the narrator surprisingly funny, but they are just plain surprising. What seems like a serious book about the topics of morality, humanity, and potentially religion very much turns into a funny take on all of these topics. Limbo certainly follows in their footsteps, bringing out the nasty side of various angels that stand in the path of our protagonist/narrator. I feel like a lot of religiously informed works, literature and television alike, has shifted to the infighting between the angels these days. So much of the underlying plot boils down to angels lying to one another in their own personal war. There are other characters for whom Limbo is a sort of retreat and they’re going to enjoy as much of it as they can. There are certain elements of punished characters not really giving a shit anymore, and doing whatever they feel like if they can get away with it. ![]() The jokes, the references, and some of the actions of the characters are very much unexpected. On top of that, the author embellishes on the stories included a bit, changing key parts of them to suit the narrative of the novel. It blends the lines of magic, faith, religion, and mythology through its depiction of Limbo–what seems to be the traditionally Christian version–combined with the mythological and religious figures of other faiths and cultures worldwide. So in a lot of ways this book is magical realism, but in other ways it’s not. They also have a great relationship with Chuck–the name given to the dark soul attached to the sword they use to send away champions. The narrator tells us the stories of the champions they have selected, revealing parts of themselves as they do so. Despite their strange status, our narrator doesn’t seem able to leave but instead is charged with sending others back to Earth to save humanity. But it’s also about an entertaining figure who inhabits Limbo and is the only inhabitant not condemned there as punishment or brought there to await judgement. Limbo is about champions, it’s about faith, and it’s about hope. ![]() Pieces of the person’s identity return until finally, by the end, they remember all that they had willingly forgotten to live in peace within the Limbo. ![]() From the first champion they receive a sword forged with the dark soul of a long forgotten god, and together the two forge their ways through Limbo to find all of the souls the Earth requires. There, amongst all the souls awaiting judgement, this person is tasks with sending twelve champions back to Earth to save humankind. A creature, unsure of what exactly they are, but likely a forgotten angel, awakens in the Limbo.
